A legacy of more than 175 years

Andreas Gredig from Grüsch settles in Pontresina and buys the inn "Rössli" in the Laret housing complex for his son Lorenz. The foundation for today's Grand Hotel Kronenhof is laid.

1860–1898: Lorenz Gredig extends the property to include the adjoining old schoolhouse and two outbuildings. Master builder Nikolaus Hartmann senior constructs the "Bellavista" wing, later the horseshoe-shaped three-wing complex with a Cour d'honneur, designed by architects Jacob and Georg Ragaz. The hotel counts over 350 guest beds.

1901–1914: Bernese painter Otto Haberer creates the ceiling frescoes, depicting the four seasons. Lorenz Gredig-Fanconi takes over the management; the Rhaetian Railway connects Pontresina year-round. Plans for a new room wing end with the outbreak of war in 1914.

1914–1945: The Gredig family's wine trade secures a stable income through the war years, as guest numbers decline. In 1928, the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz bring international guests back to the Upper Engadine; the wooden ice pavilion follows in 1933. After Lorenz Gredig-Fanconi's death in 1940, his six children continue running the business through the Second World War.

1948–1989: The Olympic flame returns to St. Moritz in 1948; Kronenhof gains an indoor and outdoor pool in 1963. In 1975, Rita-Angela Gredig becomes the first woman to lead the hotel. In 1989, after 141 years, the Gredig family sells the hotel to Kronag AG.

1996–2004: Swiss investors Hans C. Bodmer and Andreas G. Schmid run the hotel until 2002, when Zurich hotelier Henry Hunold takes over. In 2004, AG Grand Hotels EngadinerKulm, owner of Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, acquires Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

2004-today: From a new Spa and 28 new rooms built by architect Justus Dahinden, to various renovations of rooms and suites by Pierre-Yves Rochon, as well as the restoration of the public spaces, bar, and restaurants, the hotel exudes both original grandeur and refreshed style. Since 2024, Claudio Laager has led the house as General Manager.
